Sue James, one of the London teachers creating a special Vivencia in honour of Rolando’s 95th birthday, contributed the post below, inspired by Rumi and Rolando’s deep connection with the sacred in life.
Sue writes…
‘Rumi the mystical lover, knew that ‘all life is sacred’, and to wake someone from a slumber where this was not present for them, was never advisable. In his world the soul that is ready to hear how sacred life is, will always be listening, every cell in their body is waiting for the music to arrive.
When I read these two poems I am reminded of the legacy of Rolando Toro.
‘I will be waiting here….
For your silence to break,
For your soul to shake,
For your love to wake!’
― Rumi, The Essential Rumi
‘I don’t want learning, or dignity, or respectability. I want this music, and this dawn, and the warmth of your cheek against mine.’
― Rumi, The Essential Rumi
Rolando was someone who heard the music, responded, broke his silence, and has shaken many of us out of our slumber – my waking was from the very first time I ever attended a class.
I became aware that love and life as a sacred moment is inexplicably linked. And it is through an affective connection as a species we become able to commune as one body, and honour the sacred in each person as well as the sacredness in life itself. To start to see our sameness as well as our differences. We are all equal, during our dancing we can start to let go of our judging and assessing, drop our many different masks and become vulnerable enough to show ourselves fully in the present moment.
For me, this is what makes life worthwhile, it is not my identity, the things I own, the status I have that enlivens my life, it is the quality of my connections, the depth of my love and my ability to be with what is in any given moment.’
