This post came about after receiving an email from one of our members, a poet and writer who had for a long time heard about R. Toro’s poetry and wanted to read it, but had never seen any of it and did not know if any had been translated.
Apparently not a day went by without R. Toro writing poetry. The psychologist who created the Biodanza system saw himself primarily as a poet, and wrote 6 poetry books (listed below) – 5 available in Spanish, and one in Italian. These were published in Chile, Venezuela, Mexico and Italy. More recently, in 2015, an Anthology of Poetry has been published in Brazil.
“It is an honour for me to translate these poems from Spanish to English. A big thank you to Liz Darcy Jones for editing them, and to Biodanza Association UK for posting them here for you to enjoy them,” said Paula Jardim, a Biodanza Didactic Facilitator based in the South West of England.
I Need Fire
I need the fire which lives by
consuming bodies
with its passion and hope
I need the fire which illuminates
the lives of others
making them bright
I need the firelight
the glow which deepens
when lips get closer and tingle
the electric sensation
when creatures touch and mingle…
I need the fire of initiation
I Need Rain
I need rain
cold, persistent torrents
over my heart
rain shoulder-high floods over and up
water my eyelids to teach me eternity once again
rain on my hands repeatedly
in a storm of caresses
for you and me.
I Need the Wind
I need the wind
furiously tearing curtains
banging doors and plucking off hinges
I need the wind
talking about transience
and hurling objects into forever
Give me the wind with the voice of a crazy elder
the wind with its omens
the hurricane heart-wind driving my life
the wind shrieking impossibilities
calling absent ones
filling the sails of my boat
forever making matter wander…
Now more than ever I need the wind
in this eternal yet static way
in this final season…
I need the wind.
